Second Skins

There is a tale alive
on the bathroom floor.

Pants and socks hug the walls
discarded like extra skins
so that we may adorn our bodies
with appropriate attire
to walk unnoticed in public.

Unlike the snakes
or insects
that will never reclaim
or even
return to the sight
we
(shamefully, lovingly, hurriedly)
return
gather our second skins
(The clean ones – of course.)
don them with pride
for what they signify.

That we are again ourselves.

We have entered the state of mind
that allows us
to breathe
laugh
and sing.
