Plateaus

After you’ve reached and grabbed
after the thing
that has been coveted
has been pulled down from the sky –
A star in the calmest night
able to be gathered and claimed
with the reach of a small child
drawn down to earth,
held covered in both hands.
A lightning bug
with a propensity for
continual light.

There is a rush that calls for
the feeling of letting go
the feeling also
of holding on
tensing up and hoping
that whatever happens next
wherever it takes you
will be forward.

Hope here
turns into paralysis
as each victory
starts to feel the same.

Until the moon
is the only thing left in the night sky
and you are surrounded
by starlight.
