When We Gather

We are
all of us
distraught.

This isn’t the first time
that something like this
has crossed our minds
or for that matter
happened within our family.

But it is a first time
for her.

We gather together
to celebrate
commiserate
to relate
what it was
that made a life special.

The truth of the matter is
that in those quiet moments
as we come together
the collected strength
of our nostalgic thoughts
is so loud
that we often find ourselves
not talking at all.

That’s okay
after all we prefer it this way.

Our speech is
without words
because
for the most part
they’d just muck everything up
anyway.
