Dangerous Beliefs

We set fire against fire
taking away the fuel
that the main fire would reach for
if left to its own devices.

We shared a commonality
my friends and I
when we gathered
out here
on the plains
in the forests
at the edges of towns
we pushed back
drove fires away.

We played a dangerous game
predicting the wind
holding in our heads
the belief
that when everything was said and done
the fire was our prey
a living thing
meant to be cowed
by our presence.
