Minor Changes

When we woke up
everything had changed.

There was this overwhelming feeling
of dread
the night before
like we couldn’t possibly know
what was coming.
There was
no way to prepare for it.
In the grand scheme
its inevitability was only
a few ticks on the face
of a dusty grandfather clock.

Going forward
we quickly realized that
our world was coated
in a type of permanent mist
a fog
that blurred lines
changed perceptions
of things we’d taken for granted
filling our lives with monsters
and creatures we had no concept of.

But
like any minor change
it was something that we’d adjust to
take in
and assimilate.

We had proven to be adept at this
making the surreal
the normal
painstakingly phasing out
our elaborate perceptions
and histories
of the past.
