Fooling Myself

There is the inevitable thought
that escapes just before sleep
that I’m falling.
Simultaneously I am pushed from rest
and drawn in.
Grabbed by the fingers of sleep
before falling deep
into whatever dream world
might lay claim
to my mind.

There is nothing for it
other than to think
that this is natural.
Resting in bed
while experiencing zero-gravity.
Realizing the exact moment
your body is separated
from your mind
given freedom to roam
explore the multiverse
of dream.
As though it’s a place
that is completely harmless
as though nothing you discover
can ever come back with you.

Fooling myself
into a good night’s sleep.
