Over Dramatic

Here I stood
at the edge of my world
on a high cliff
overlooking a place
that I’d known as familiar.

Over the edge
a vast sea of possibilities
of unknown causes and effects
of people that I would never meet
of things
I would never try
and also
a small light.

A wisp that flitted through the darkness
over the tops of cresting waves
through thickets of broken trees
past places I’d dreamed of visiting
and amongst the ruins
of a former life.

This all seems so dramatic
when you step back
find yourself at the end
of a wooden table
on a hot summer day
nursing a pint
examining the hours previous
to your present plot

Reflecting upon
what got you to wherever
attempting to force together
the pieces of a puzzle
that may never truly
fit together.
