Inventing Pride

The boys hanging around the entrance
of the old lawnmower bar
at 2:30 in the morning.
Holding on to the last moments of a night
they’ll admit to remembering as the last
true time
they found a person to talk to.

They smoke their cigarettes
and gather in huddled circles.
Talk about how
what they do
right here
right now
is the last vestige
of community
the final pillar
of togetherness.
If they believe that’s true
(that’s great!)
they’re clinging to something
they’ve found to be
tangible
real
solid.

Something they can be proud of
look out for
protect against the
other harsh lights that might shine upon them.
They are creators
inventing pride
in the attempt to demonstrate
that they do actually
have something that
they care for.
