We broke hard against the current
oars flailing like arms outstretched
amid free fall.
Behind us was something wholly unnatural
a great monstrous thing
had been warned of.
Great serpentine monsters
drawn precariously upon yellowed maps
depicting the edge of the world
had gotten everything all wrong.
We were mad with the burning in our arms
and as far as I can tell
not a single one of us looked back.
So afraid were we
to confirm the great terror
that had befallen us
that we choose
to attempt the impossible:
