174. The Waking Nightmare

We woke to find ourselves adrift
finally at peace
with the idea
that the storm had passed.
We’d listened to the thing
beat against the walls
hitting windows like a hundred fingers
tap tap tapping
for our attention.
Each drop
making such a thunderous noise
colliding with our tin roof
in the middle of the night
that we could hardly
keep our eyes shut.

It had to have
ended in the night
and
like many nightmares
our fears assuaged by waking
we slipped back into the sweet warmth
of dreams.
To wake and wonder
if what we’d experienced
was indeed real.
