We felt for others
as though they were the friends
we had cultivated and known.
We lived through others
as though we ourselves
had only ever experienced their lives.
Stopping to recognize
was like drowning
feeling the water of memory
creep over goose-pocked flesh
and into our bodies
pouring into our mouths nose and ears
finding its way in through our eyes
we were becoming someone else
we were becoming what we thought
we had made every decision in our lives
