What She Never Knew

Walking out of his periphery
what she didn’t know
(and never would)
was that he’d fallen in love
countless times before.

He would see a girl
a woman
a person
on the street corner
waiting for a change of light
in the deli at a supermarket
asking for something in the case
behind the desk working at the bank
resting their chin in an upturned palm
getting out of a car
grabbing something from the back seat
just simply being alive.

the questions he asked himself were subliminal
never physically formed on his lips
where would that road end?
What did the journey mean?
would there be another?

And then as always
there was.
