That Dying Maple

felt old
weathered against so much
life.
sculpted by time and experience
to represent
something more in tune with
modern conceptions of
wisdom.

To say that there was a resistance
to change
is an understatement.
The thing took up root
bore down into the world it knew
and firmly stated
(with the vehemence of its actions)
that it would not give up
standing firm
when that’s what mattered
pushing back
when force was necessary.

This plot
this one place
was an entire world
to that one resistant thing
a place to be born
a place to rise
a place to fall
a place to know
as home.
