Oceanus or: The Modern Plight of the Selfie.

Oceanus stands atop his shell-backed pedestal
and the tourists fawn
they watch the water
running over stone
fall to the euro-laden pool below
as many have before.

Basking but before the coin is thrown
they turn around
coax their families
their lovers
their
“Whoever I could find, it didn’t matter.
It was the Trevi Fountain
and I looked good.”

And most of the time
Oceanus
divine personification of the sea
traversing the great river
encircling the Earth
is conspicuously missing
or at best
only half-present.
