Mere Seconds

When we heard about the storm
from communities in its path
we were brave.
coming together to provide solace
light candles
prey
for the compatriots which we had not met
but had heard of.
their danger was our danger
their horror
our horror
and it was easy
to stand up to it from afar
but when the storms lashed out
unabated
We quickly convinced ourselves
that the best course of action
was to get out of the way completely
to hide in our straw homes
built from a sense of pride
rather than logic.
We once thought untouchable
until a slight gust of wind
rattled the rooftops
changed our minds
within seconds.
