Erasing the Past

Staring at the thing
didn’t make it go away.
Sticking a fist out with an extended thumb
and a closed eye
attempting to block it
from line of sight
didn’t work either.

Memories lingered
the place remained
as it always had
(as it always would)
even though
now
it was something far less
having the strange effect
of bestowing extravagance
giving it more influence
making it more powerful.

Attempting to erase the past
by forgetting or purging
gave it more focus
acute or otherwise.
