Opposites

Talking at each other without listening
hoping that something might sink in.
One insisting that the other
was an integral part
of some life-changing tragedy.

(“They were all jealous, thinking
no one could have a connection like that-only Carolyn.”
She said
“At the funeral
you made a lot of people jealous.
I mean you’d have been confused too.
That’s how I know you.”)

The other asking questions
wondering what it is
that they started talking about
in the first place.

(“What are we,
I mean
what are you talking about?”
She kept digging
in some futile attempt to discern meaning.
“We don’t…your baby is crying.”)

When there was a lull
I half expected the confused half
to run.
