Waterfalls

Moments like this are easy to pass up:
Thinking about words and being dragged down by fear.
These aren’t the happy thoughts you think of
holding your hands out
with your eyes closed
on some special occasion.

Trying to say something here
trying to find the voice
the words catching in my throat
holding place
a levee
half-broken with use
and water rising up over
threatening to break.
An admission:
the very real possibility
that there’s only a matter of time
before the whole thing
the purpose
the protection
is gone
washed away
and every drop spilling over
becomes a waterfall.

Eventually something will wander out
claim to have known
and then retreat
hoping to have attracted enough attention
that following waterfalls
will flow
more freely.
