An Old Friend

Walking along those cobbled streets
will bring back memories of time that
felt like they stretched on through infinity.
A piercing light on the horizon
as the sun fades just out of view
frozen forever
held out to agonize and glorify
but they aren’t
they can’t be.
Because I will experience them again
as I did the first time
and then a second
and third
they will adapt
change
as though an old friend
waiting to be reunited
to stop me with a hand on my chest
asking after my family
asking
just what the hell I’ve been up to.
