Assumptions

Looking at his face
there is an understanding that he
courted more anger and aggression
that I could ever conceive.
He took the jabs

and the savagery
simply for being alive.
He dealt with the whispers

and the screams.
They called for him to be torn down
to be weighed as something less than
to be taken as a symbol
for a culture that meant more
as a threat
than as an ally.
