As Though a Great Chorus

Walking in a line
mother and children.
The leader with her
chin up
head up
neck exposed
leading the pack
to a type of slaughter
without so much as a clue.

Meanwhile the Children behind
have their eyes every which way
questioning motivations
attempting to give
the hint
so desperately needed
to stop
re-evaluate
to reconsider the plan.
(Whatever that may be.)

As she so eloquently advances
the mother’s actions are indeed
speaking much louder
they say
(as though a great chorus)
I’ve been through this before
I’ve seen things
I’ve seen it all.
A few mindless squabbles
won’t change a damn thing.
