Brick by Brick

Hands on
another brick
placed in a wall so large
that the moment of it
has always been
will always be
taken for granted
a thing that always
should have just happened:
“How’d you expect a wall to be built?”
(A taunt!)
“Brick by brick.”
(A disinterested view.)
And until I thought it
I imagined each brick as having
the same story to tell
(All for one, you know
that sort of thing.)
as though the whole
should have always
ever spoken louder
than the sum of its parts.
