Before We Left

Before we left
we sprayed paint across the floors and walls
asking the questions we’d never felt the strength to ask
in the heat of the moment.

There were many of us
against a unified you
and though we struggled with our place
battering our fists into steel walls
screaming our frustration through empty hallways
feeling the exhausting compulsion of giving up
nagging at our thoughts
every time we opened our eyes
we strode on.

Light against the darkened horizon
flames in the distance
smoke rising from the East
every possible thing
we took strength in
and now
here
in our absence you might see
the possibility
that broke us
in half.
