Pretending Not to be Seen

We slunk around the rooms
pretending not to be seen
sitting in on summer nights
when even the air around us
seemed to breathe.

And this was only the beginning
the first couple minutes of our lives
together
the infantile inability to control emotions
swelling up around us
with the most beautiful light.

And the cicadas call
and the sun sets
and in those evenings
we noticed
not at all.
