False Warnings

We hugged the walls
pulling back from the crowd gathering on the rapido
waiting to see how full the swell would make us
before discerning comfort.

When the rains came
they were upon us
like mosquitos.
But these weren’t the people
travel guides warned of
looking to make a quick buck
lighten a load or two.

They were us
hoping to experience something
waist deep.
Hoping to notice the sun shine at the right time
as they glanced in its direction
having held their breath for just this particular moment
so many other times.
Something to connect this place
with whatever
reality they faced.

No
there was nothing here
to be afraid of
at all.
