Comparisons

We stood in a circle
holding out our particular injuries
for one another
to inspect.

For me
my arm was gashed in a fall
helpless to prevent my collision with the sidewalk
I took what was coming.

A friend stood by my side
holding out her knee.
Ashamed
she said
“So I was a little drunk last night.”
clearly holding herself in scorn
looking at the large scab
surrounded by infection
covering most of her knee.

Her friend
the third of our group
was silent
sharing a moment with me
to look at appreciate
our mutual friend’s injury.

Finally she too held out her leg
with a single long crevice-like scar
running from just in the middle of her thigh
to just above her ankle.
“That’s all I’ve got.”

And again
her friend and I
shared silence.
