Moments

somewhere along the line
we must have decided that we weren’t going to take
every little thing
into account

this was before we realized that an inventory
(of sorts)
was the only physical way
we knew
to measure what love meant

we sat beneath bookshelves counting
pointing out memories
we’d both held onto

moments that made us think of one another
as simple things
not so complex and unrealistic
as something perception might mask

and that was only ever
the beginning of time
when mountains had yet to rise
plains spread eternal
across the landscape
of our expectations
