spinning hasn’t always involved circles
we would stand together
lopsided on a whirling metal playground feature
its wrought metal hand rails rising to the middle
like some kind of star
spreading out in an explosion

we spun our wheels
wishing to know the familiar
looking up into the rain darkened sky
to see a place that might have seemed like home
not to
(if only in that moment)
recognize it as home at all

and here
now as the snow falls
the time passes
and just a faint reminder of a kiss
is all there is
to push forward
through the impenetrable chill
of a time without light
and only the howl of some Northern wind
to greet us
