died in vain

a type of compliance
a willingness to let go and hold back
a desire to say
if this whole thing turns pear-shaped
it was never in my hands

a way to blame someone that doesn’t ever enter the room
a dependency on the limitations of thin air
and all the legacy that does with it

lets not say
but those trees would have been pulped
or
that paper would have been filled
but rather
a life was taken
in vain
