as close as I can

we’re surrounded by marble
statues looking past o through
caught at a point that might
be considered embarrassing
but it is this time
with winds whipping
where I get to share what it means to be me
with you
it’s the closest i can give you
to the full experience
to know that you don’t belong
to a place that is so far outside
of any defined norms
and then to take you
to draw you close
and be as honest as I can

“This is not my world.”
“These are not my people.”
“This is not my home.”

and these are not the lyrics of an appropriate pop song
and these are not the cries of desperation
that you might imagine them to be
just the calm
before the ever waiting storm
